The reputation as a gimmick band has buried how tight the actual songwriting is on the peak records. 'Detroit Rock City' opens with a car crash and then just locks in and does not flinch, the riff earns every single second of the drama that precedes it. Very few bands could pull that off without it becoming a joke.
